Darwyn Cooke’s Parker stories are period pieces, and Cooke spent his career studying their particular historical moment. As a result he can capture that moment not just by what he draws but by how he draws it. The stories are violent and cruel, a side of the postwar decades we tend not to think about, but Cooke (and Richard Stark, who wrote the stories to begin with) keep us interested, even if only to see the fallout of various schemes and disasters.
