A Mathematician Carries Two Pens at All Times

Advice passed down by my academic advisor from her own, who would apparently borrow and not return the pens of his graduate students to ensure they always had a backup. Paper is available everywhere, use napkins or menus or the margin of a book, but you can’t work it out on paper if you don’t have a pen.
